| First of all, I would like to introduce the history of the faculty of Engineering, Niigata University. Nagaoka Technical High School that was named Nagaoka National College of Technology later was established at Nagaoka City in 1923. It became one of faculties in Niigata University when the university was founded on June 1st, 1949. Then the faculty of engineering was moved up from Nagaoka City to Ikarashi Campus at Niigata City in 1980. Now, the faculty of Engineering has seven departments and 2,000 students. It is the biggest faculty in Niigata University. Besides, there are over 20,000 graduates so far. After the graduation, they become civil servants or researchers and also they work in various fields like industrial field, educational field and so on. Furthermore, many of them rendered distinguished services.
Our educational policy is "improving the basic ability of science subjects". In advance, we aim to educate people to have " good personality and Kougakuryoku". The science technology is complex and progresses very quickly at present, so we have to study and research continually to follow the kind of situation. That is the reason why the basic ability should be solid. Also, we need to have thoughts from various perspective points to solve the issues that human beings have been made like the environmental issue. Therefore, the general education is important and the good personality is necessary. "Kougakuryoku" is the word that was created by our faculty. It means "the ability of creation and the ability of learning". You can understand that it is an attitude for the challenge to make the society better in future by engineering. Moreover, there is the base of this education named "Education Center for Engineering and Technology" in the faculty.
A university is the place of "education". Also, it is the place to produce knowledge and wisdom, so that it is the place of "research". Students will spend more time to research as going to advanced levels. By the way, what kind of category engineering belongs to? As you know, it belongs to the category to make everything, for example, machines, automobiles, robots, computers, chemical products, bridges, houses and even the things that do not have the figures like computer software. So, engineering belongs essentially to the category that is" to find the limit (science) and to challenge the limit (engineering)". However, in order to create the things that are practical and do not damage the environment, engineering mind is "There is a limit. We face the limit, but we do not exceed it. It means challenging the limit". In the faculty of engineering, there are professors and students who have been challenging day and night toward the things that they want to know, to solve and to design. The atmosphere in our faculty is the best educational environment for students and I really hope you join us. In addition, over 500 students graduate from the faculty of engineering every year and more than 60% of them go on to graduate schools and keep challenging for their goals.
