In our modern society there is an ever-present need for new technologies. The Engineering Department of Niigata University has, since its founding, made a comprehensive and thorough grounding in the basics the mainstay of its education. We believe that it is through a grasp of the basics that flexible response to change is possible. In addition to this, the Department has set up research into advanced applied technology and sent out highly-skilled graduates into society. Our department has excellent facilities and multi-skilled and talented staff. All our students take part in advanced research and thereby gain new knowledge, skills and innovative ability. We will continue in our education of technical specialists and researchers who have the capacity to deal with a variety of problems.

At Niigata University, you will have the chance to become friends with students from other disciplines, thereby broadening your own outlook. The university has nine faculties (Humanities, Economics, Law, Education and Human Sciences, Engineering, Science, Agriculture, Medicine and Dentistry). In addition, it has a Brain Research Institute, and interdisciplinary research facilities such as the Research Institute for Hazards in Snowy Areas, the Research Laboratory for Molecular Genetics, the Integrated Information Processing Centre, the Centre for Cooperative Research, and the International Student Centre. Many joint research projects are carried out in cooperation with other departments allowing specialists to extend the boundaries of knowledge of many fields.

 

Many Ways of Entering the Department
Entrance exams for the Faculty of Engineering of Niigata University take place both for the first and second semesters. In addition to this, there are special entrance exams for vocational school students, and there are also exams held to admit graduates of technical colleges, junior colleges, and other universities, directly into the third year of studies. The special entrance exams for vocational high school students have been held for six years, and there are now 170 students from such schools studying in the department. Through lectures, practical experiments, and extra-curricular activities, the students in the department from these diverse educational backgrounds can stimulate each other's ideas and polish their various skills. We hope to send them out into the world as well-rounded individuals with broad knowledge and an ability to innovate.
