Osteoporosis can be seen in Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)
patients where mechanical aspects instead of pathological cause the bone
erosion. SCI patients are commonly subjected to bone fractures, in
particular during movement from the wheelchair to the bed. There is a
clinical need to estimate the bone risk fracture in patients on a subject
specific basis in order to determine the type and the magnitude of loading
the patients can be subjected to. This can also have implications during
rehabilitation where functional electrical stimulation in conjunction with
a locomotive robot can be used to get the patients on their feet again and
mechanically load the skeletal frame under controlled conditions. Subject
specific finite element models of the tibia of SCI patients were created
and were compared to an able bodied control group. Scans were obtained
using a pQCT scan, where the images were imported into Mimics where edge
detection of the bone was carried out and a three dimensional finite
element model of the bone created. Material properties of the mesh were
obtained through the grey scale value of each image slice, connecting the
density, element stiffness as well as the ultimate stress of each element
together. Loading was applied to the models and the risk of fracture
calculated using Abaqus (v.6.11) and compared between the two
groups.
