Training the next generation of highly-creative technical experts

Find the limits, and defy the limits.
Drawing on science and technology to generate new creations, both tangible and intangible.

The principles of the Faculty of Engineering, Niigata University

  • Developing the spirit of valuing manufacturing and craftsmanship (monozukuri)
  • Developing abundant creativity and flexible thinking power
  • Developing the capacity to understand fundamental phenomena correctly, and make comprehensive decisions on the overall picture
  • Developing knowledge not only in a certain field, but also across a range of disciplines

In April 2017
the Faculty of Engineering will transform its education and research

The seven departments that have composed the faculty until now will be combined into one department, allowing the faculty to adapt to global society in fields with broad outlooks.

By combining the faculty’s seven departments to encourage the pursuit of collaboration among the fields of engineering and ensuring that students have a firm motivation to learn, we will restructure the education offered by the faculty into programs in a number of different majors that allow students to apply a broad outlook as they acquire a good balance of fundamental knowledge and specialist skills.

As part of efforts to train talented people who will be capable of adapting to the global society of the future, we will seek to enrich and improve education in engineering through the programs in fields of engineering, while also newly establishing multidisciplinary, integrated programs combining arts and sciences that transcend the conventional boundaries of engineering.

The nine new programs

In the first year of study, students take classes to make the transition and gain a basic introduction to engineering. Following this, in the second year students choose one of five different fields of study to major in: mechanics, information and electronics, chemistry and materials, architecture, or interdisciplinary areas.
By gaining an overview of engineering in their first year of study, students are able to go on to study a more specialized field for their major from the second year onward.

Graduate school education and Employment

Well-rounded graduate school education

With well-developed facilities and outstanding faculty members at the forefront of their fields, Niigata University gives students the opportunity to receive and engage in high-quality education and research. While most graduate students pursue professional careers as researchers or developers for private companies or public institutions after completing their master’s programs, there are also an increasing number of students who go on to doctoral programs with the aim of becoming researchers at universities, national laboratories, and other research institutions.
